While on his way to school Rikuo hits away Karasu Tengu who was asking him about his intentions to succeed the clan. Once he gets to school he thinks about how he just wants to live normally and overhears Kana and her friends talking about how the abandoned school building being haunted.

When the lunch break begins he meets up with his friends in the Kiyo Cross and it’s leader, Kiyotsugu informs them of the plan to check out the abandoned school building at night. Starting the series off with the conclusion to the Gyuuki arc wasn’t something I was really expecting, especially since it removes the mystery of who the current villain is, but seeing as it gives them the opportunity to slowly build their way towards it I suppose it isn’t really that bad. However how it removes the first few chapters of material to still is something I can’t really get used to, so hopefully they’ll cover this later on with a flashback of some sort.

Other than that I thought that this was a decent enough way to start the series serving to introduce some of the characters and how Rikuo must succeed his grandfather as the current head of the Nura clan as the Nurarihyon. While still focusing on Rikuo’s current wish to live as a normal human, conflicting with the issue of him succeeding the clan. As far as some of the voice actors go so far, Jun Fukuyama did a pretty good job at voicing Rikuo and from some of his past roles he should easily be able do both his day and night forms well. And Aya Hirano and Jouji Nakata were both good choices for Kana and Gyuuki as well.

As I like the manga I will admit that I have some expectations for this series and it has me wondering how far it’ll cover, with the confirmed 26 episodes indicating that it may go as far as the end of the battle with Tamazuki or whether it’ll go further into the current arc of the manga. From the first episode things look pretty good though, so hopefully Studio DEEN can keep this up.

For those unfamiliar with the series, Nurarihyon no Mago follows Rikuo Nura who’s three quarters human, one quarter Youkai, and the grandson of the Nurarihyon as he forms his own Hyakki Yakkou to succeed him all the while trying to maintain his daily life. And one of the great things about the series itself is that most of the Youkai themselves are actually based on actual Youkai in Japanese folklore so it’s always interesting to look them up.
