Caxton’s men independently intervene and manage to save Garcia before Roberta can pull the trigger, leaving the maid in her delusions.
And just after the next episode was released, procrastination sucks.
Shortly after this Revy’s group finally arrives but is effortlessly defeated when Roberta shatters Shenhua’s machete with her teeth and destroys Sawyer’s chainsaw, kicking Lotton the Wizard in the groin just as he makes his entrance. Upon seeing this Fabiola tries to stop her but finds that she’s truly lost it. From the car, Rock continues to predict the way things are playing out and how Garcia’s role will now change, and just as he wakes up he finds himself surrounded by Caxton and his men, and while they mean no harm he takes up a pistol and confronts them on killing his father and taking away Roberta. To this Caxton gives him his gun and offers him revenge, leading to him remembering how his father taught him to look at things from more than one angle.
Around this point Rock meets Eda who informs him that what he ordered has been delivered and that she passed some russians on the roof, to him things are still going as planned as Balalaika attempts to aid the man who should have been her enemy, warning him about and flushing out Roberta before she retreats. And Rock had been able to predict this from the unsettled duel she had with Chang which led to her being indebted to Dutch, what he needs to do now is make sure that Caxton and his men escape. As they prepare to part Rock also suggests that the Hong Kong Triads should also be paying Eda, and he knows that Mr Chang is backed by someone. At this point Caxton remarks on how perfectly Balalaika’s troops are covering them and Garcia reads the note instructing him where to lead them.
Over at the docks Benny and Dutch receive a message from Rock informing them that the US Government has hired them, and when they turn this down they receive a call from Mr Chang. At this point Revy’s group attempt to rescue Garcia but are disarmed by Balalaika’s snipers. Caxton’s men also happen to find Fabiola and having made it to their truck they head towards the docks, with Balalaika and Caxton exchanging some parting words about how they never met on the frontlines, but they both had their battlefields, with Balalaika lamenting on how she had done the same thing as Caxton but received a different result. Around this point Rock retrieves the now disarmed Revy and meets up with Benny and Dutch at the docks.
As dawn comes they head out Dutch remarks on how perfect the forms are and Benny informs Caxton that they’re heading up the Mekong to the Golden Triangle. On Roberta’s side of things she boards an airplane that will also be going there thanks to some tickets from Eda, who in her guise as a CIA agent tells her that she could have at least showered and that they’ve organised everything to help her find those foxes, to this she tells her she’ll be taking her head afterward. Back on the Black Lagoon Revy meets Fabiola again who tells her that she’s starting to think that Rock is dangerous and that the reason she doesn’t get closer to him is both not to learn about who he really is or lose interest. And that if anything she sees him as her salvation, at this point Rock meets Garcia and informs him that it’s time for the actors to take the stage and that he has a prop he wasn’t expecting.
Both Garcia and Fabiola losing their innocence may have taken a back seat after the last episode but during this one I think it was easily overshadowed by everything else that happened in this one either way, with things like Balalaika making her move and a Roberta who’s truly snapped. But more noticeably it’s almost scary how accurate Rock has been predicting things.
A while back he may have covered his walls and a few maps with multiple setups in order to plan out what direction things would take, but I never would have suspected that he would have gone this far. Being able to predict not only how and what but also when things were going to happen while spurring things on from the sidelines by making the appropriate preparations. And the scariest thing about it was how accurate it all was, some things may have been happening on the fly but he was able to take them into account with the only thing he didn’t being the gun Garcia received from Caxton himself, an unexpected prop which he would have to already know a fair bit about Caxton to predict. If anything it also showed just how far he’s descended, he may have said that he wanted to continue viewing things from the “twilight” he’s in at the end of the second barrrage, but I can’t help but think that he was enjoying everything that was happening. Aside from that it was also interesting to see him ask about just who is backing Mr Chang, and on a larger scale Roanapur itself, as it goes without saying that the town still doesn’t truly stand by the gangsters alone. There’s an outside group that benefits from the things going on there pulling the strings.
That said what I probably liked about this episode the most would have had to have been the interactions between Balalaika and Caxton, who with the former being a former soviet soldier and the latter still being in the US army would have been fated to meet on the battlefield and fight against each other if the Cold War hadn’t ended when it did. And that despite being trained with the idea that they would go to war against the other’s side they found themselves bogged down in proxy wars, be they in Afghanistan or in Vietnam. They may have been on opposing sides and their backgrounds may have been different but there were just so many parallels between them, to which they only really differed in how they ended, Balalaika was punished while Caxton was commended. In a sense however the results ended up being quite similar, and I don’t know what it is but I really like these sorts of parallels between opposing forces. And either way it was just an interesting exchange.
Other than that a Roberta who had truly snapped also made this episode a fun one, she may have been dangerous before given all the simply superhuman feats she pulled off in the last episode and this one as well. But now without a grip on her sanity, wavering between her bloodthirst and her delusions, it seems the situation got worse, she’s still after Caxton’s head and is now completely unstable. Where to put it simply she’s now unable to distinguish between her delusions and reality, it’s something that has me wondering just what will happen when Garcia steps up and appears before her again, Caxton’s men saving him would have had her convinced that it was all just in her head and that he’s safe and sound back in Venezuela. So because of this I’m wondering whether she really can be saved, it’s as if she’s broken beyond repair now. Like the man in her delusions told her before, she may have been able to slowly attempt to redeem herself if she had stayed back but now she’s lost that chance.
